Christmas: The Truth is All We Need

God is Truth. ("Sicuti est Trinitas, Deus unus, solus, magnus, verus, verax, veritas: As is the Trinity, one God, alone, great, true, truthful, truth."1). That He came into the world as a helpless infant, needing others, is a profound witness and example for all of us. Christmas, and all that accompanies the way we celebrate it, and all that it seems to require, always seems lost, somehow. The Truth, Jesus, can be hard to reach through the hustle and bustle. So much so that we must constantly be reminded to keep Christ in Christmas.

The Truth we seek is often presented as something difficult to bear. Phrases in conversations like, "Let me be truthful here," and, "I am speaking frankly now." Or, "I'm just telling you the truth," give the listener a warning that something troublesome will follow, as if the truth hurts. And, it sometimes does. Knowing the truth frees us, as in "The truth will set you free," (John 8:31-32) but it also presents us with a mirror, a true reflection of facts that we just never seem to be able to accept readily. For whatever reasons, our truth seems to be easier to manage than the Truth, who is God. This struggle is of the ages, and creative stories, music, novels and movies punctuate history with beautiful portrayals of this struggle. They last for a time, inspiring conversations, motivations and resolutions until they fade and another inspirational masterpiece follows. And the cycle continues. Christmas comes once yearly, grandly and prophetically to remind us that the Truth is light which dispels all darkness (John 1:5). We come up with clever ways and exhaust ourselves with preparations to show our love for Truth each year. When all the while, Truth, Jesus, awaits us in our own hearts each moment of every day. May you embrace Truth this Christmas and the whole year long with love and compassion. Merry Christmas!
